Why convert Plain text to Word (DOCX)?
Plain text files are best for raw text with no formatting. Word (DOCX) is the better choice for documents you still need to edit. It opens in word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages, while Plain text opens in everything.
DOCX is lossless, so nothing your Text file contains is thrown away on the way.

What happens to your file
The page structure is read with your browser's own HTML parser. Scripts and styles are removed, every paragraph, heading and table row gets its own line, and extra blank lines are collapsed, so you get clean, readable text.
The Markdown is parsed with Marked, a fast open-source parser that follows the CommonMark and GitHub-flavoured Markdown rules. Headings, lists, links, code blocks and tables all become proper HTML, wrapped in a simple, readable page you can open in any browser.
A genuine Word document is assembled in your browser with docx, an open-source library that writes the same Office Open XML format Microsoft Word uses. Headings become Word heading styles, so the navigation pane and table of contents work, and lists, tables, links, bold and italic text are kept. Fonts and colours use Word's defaults.
Tips for a clean conversion
- Drop a whole folder's worth of Text files at once. They convert one after another and you can download everything as a single ZIP.
- Keep your original Text files until you have checked the results. Converting back later is rarely lossless.
- DOCX keeps everything it receives, so the result is only ever as good as the Text file you start with.
- Headings become real Word heading styles, so the navigation pane and an automatic table of contents work straight away. Text uses Word's default font; restyle it in Word if you want a different look.
- There is no direct Text to DOCX converter that runs in a browser, so your file is passed through 2 intermediate formats automatically.
About the formats
